A Splitwise alternative with no daily limit

Splitwise is still the app most groups think of first, and for good reason. What changed is the free plan: it limits how many expenses you can add per day, reportedly makes you wait before each one, and shows ads. If you log the whole trip on the last night, you’re stuck after the fourth receipt. Below is what changed, where Splitwise still wins, and how to do it without an account.
What is the Splitwise daily limit?
Four expenses a day on a free account, according to Splitwise’s own help centre. Pro removes the limit and costs about $5 a month or $40 a year. Until then, a friend in the group can add an expense for you, so the cap is per person.
A weekend for four easily has a dozen receipts: dinner, groceries, fuel, tickets. At four a day, the person who keeps the receipts needs three days to log them.
- A countdown before each expense. Free users report a wait of about ten seconds.
- Ads, including full-screen ones. Pro sells a totally ad-free experience.
- Currency conversion, receipt scanning and search are Pro. For a trip abroad, that’s the part you need.
Does everyone need a Splitwise account?
To see the group or add to it, yes. For a flatshare that lasts years, that’s fine. For one dinner, one stag do or one weekend away, it’s the step where someone says “I’ll sign up later” and never logs what they paid.
What changes with CabuTally?
In CabuTally the link is the way in: you open it in a browser, pick a name and you’re in. No account, no install, on Android, iPhone or a laptop.
Look around a finished trip to see one before you make your own.
| Splitwise (free) | CabuTally | |
|---|---|---|
| Expenses per day | 4 | No limit |
| Ads | Yes | No |
| To join a group | Create an account | Open the link |
| Several currencies | Converting them is Pro | Yes, free |
| Seeing the debts | Everyone sees everything | Each person sees their own |
| Who brings what | No | A to-do list in the same event |
| Closing it when it’s over | No: groups stay open | Yes: review, settle and close |
| Export | Spreadsheet, free | PDF and CSV, paid (Event Pass) |
If someone would rather have an app, CabuTally is also on Google Play, but nobody needs it: the link works the same for everyone.
Where is Splitwise still better?
Anything that never ends. Splitwise is built as a running balance between people, and that suits some groups better.
- Rent, bills and couples. Recurring expenses and a balance with each friend that carries across groups. CabuTally is for one event at a time: a trip, a dinner, a party.
- Years of polish. A native app more than a decade old, with charts, receipt scanning and itemised bills on Pro. CabuTally is new, and it shows.
- Offline. Splitwise’s native app works with no signal. CabuTally opens with the last data and keeps what you add until you’re back online, but anything that depends on others (joining, recording a payment, editing an amount) needs a connection.
- Exporting for free. Splitwise exports a group as a spreadsheet at no cost; in CabuTally the export is paid.
If your group splits rent every month and nobody minds Pro, there’s no reason to switch.
What else does CabuTally do differently?
Beyond skipping the signup, CabuTally is built for an event that starts and ends, not a ledger that stays open forever.
- Each person sees only their own debts: what they owe and what they’re owed, not everyone else’s. If the group would rather see it all, it can turn that on.
- Private expenses. A round two people buy between themselves is visible only to those two, and still settles with everything else.
- Joined late? Whoever joins picks whether they share costs from the beginning or from a date, instead of someone editing every past expense.
- An ending. When the trip is over, you review the expenses, settle up in the fewest payments and close the books.
How do I switch from Splitwise to CabuTally?
Finish the group you have in Splitwise there, and start the next event in CabuTally: there’s no import, and copying a half-finished trip by hand is the easiest way to get a number wrong.
For the next one, open an event that’s already set up, rename it if you like and share the link in the group chat. Whoever opens it is in.
